Understanding the Risks Before Accepting an Interpreting Assignment

Before saying yes, confirm that the work fits your abilities and that the scope, conditions, and payment arrangements are clear.
Assess the actual assignment
Check the languages, interpreting method, subject, complexity, and available preparation materials. Ask whether particular credentials are required in that setting. A familiar topic can still involve unfamiliar responsibilities.
Clarify the working conditions
Confirm the date, time zone, duration, venue or platform, equipment, breaks, and team arrangements. Discuss what happens if the meeting runs late or the scope changes.
Agree on the commercial terms
Request written confirmation of the fee, invoice process, payment timing, travel costs, waiting time, and cancellation arrangements. Seek clarification or appropriate advice if you do not understand an obligation. The ATA’s starting-out resources provide further professional guidance.
Verify the request and raise concerns
Check the organization through official contact details. Treat unexpected requests for upfront money or unnecessary sensitive information cautiously. Discuss confidentiality, recording, site access, travel, and potentially distressing subject matter when relevant.
If the work exceeds your competence or important conditions remain unclear, resolve those issues before committing.
